The Problem

The latest SharePoint Online Management Shell module (Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell version 16.0.27709.12000) is broken. Signing in with Connect-SPOService fails right after you enter your credentials:

powershell
Connect-SPOService -Url https://contoso-admin.sharepoint.com
Connect-SPOService : No valid OAuth 2.0 authentication session exists At line:1 char:1 + Connect-SPOService -Url https://contoso-admin.sharepoint.com + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Connect-SPOService], AuthenticationException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell.AuthenticationException,Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell.ConnectSPOService

I found nothing about this on the forums or in the official documentation.

The Fix

Roll back to version 16.0.27111.12000 (April 2026). With this version, the same command connects without any issues.

powershell
Uninstall-Module Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell -AllVersions -Force
Install-Module Microsoft.Online.SharePoint.PowerShell -RequiredVersion 16.0.27111.12000 -Force

Open a new PowerShell window and run Connect-SPOService again.
